Golden Temple tours: what a tour adds

Entry to the Golden Temple is free, and so is the langar meal. A Golden Temple tour therefore pays for something else: a guide who explains the history and the customs, a driver, or a plan that links several stops in one day. Whether you want one depends on how much context you want and how much you would rather arrange yourself.

The tour cards below list Amritsar tours with live prices and availability. Before you book any of them, check the meeting point, the length and what the price includes. Read the rules in timings and rules first, because every group follows them: heads covered, shoes off.

Golden Temple tour: how to choose

Five checks before you pay.

The temple has no ticket

Entry is free. A tour fee pays for the guide, the transport or extras, never for access to the temple. Be careful with anyone who sells you a ticket, a fast-track pass or a VIP visit at the gate.

Meeting point and length

Look at where the tour starts, how long it lasts and where it ends. A tour that ends far from your hotel costs you extra time.

What the price includes

Check for transport, entry fees at other sites, meals and the guide's language. A low price that excludes the extras is not cheaper.

Cancellation

Terms differ by tour. Read them before you pay, especially for trips that depend on sunset or on the day's schedule.

Respect on the way

A tour group follows the same rules as everyone else. Keep your voice low, cover your head and take your shoes off. See Sikhism for visitors for the customs.

Amritsar tour to Attari

The border ceremony at Attari is about 30 km from Amritsar, and a taxi takes roughly one hour. You can join a tour or hire a car. The ceremony takes place around sunset, and the time changes with the season, so confirm the current time with your operator.

Bring your passport as photo ID, and carry as little as you can, because bags are checked. The border crossing itself is closed to traffic, which is separate from the ceremony. Some travel advisories ask visitors to avoid the area within 10 km of the border, so read your government's current advice before you book. More on the Wagah and Attari page.

Museum visits with a guide

Where a guide helps, and where a ticket is enough.

The Partition Museum offers guided visits on request through the museum management. The museum is housed in the Town Hall, 5โ€“7 minutes on foot from the temple and Jallianwala Bagh, so it fits easily between two other stops. It is closed on Mondays and on 26 January, 15 August and 2 October. Children up to 5 years and Partition survivors enter free. Photos and video are not allowed inside.

At Gobindgarh Fort, the fort itself is open daily from 10:00 to 22:00. The Toshakhana and the Warfare Museum are open Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00โ€“17:00, and closed on Mondays. Packages for foreign visitors cost from INR 300 by day, and from INR 1,100 after 17:00 for fuller packages. Compare the contents of a package before you compare prices.

For the memorial garden at Jallianwala Bagh you do not need a tour. It is a place for a quiet walk.
