Partition Museum Amritsar at a glance

It is a 5 to 7 minute walk from the Golden Temple and Jallianwala Bagh.
It is open Tuesday to Sunday and closed on Mondays. If you would rather see Amritsar with a guide, look at Amritsar tours. The museum itself also arranges guided visits on request through its management.

What you see inside the museum
A museum built around people's memories.
Memories of 1947
The galleries follow the partition of British India and its effect on ordinary families, with a focus on personal stories.
Objects and interviews
Personal belongings are shown next to interviews and audiovisual material. Plan time to listen and read, not only to walk through.
Accessible
The museum has a lift and accessible toilets and is suitable for wheelchairs.
No photos
Photos and videos inside the museum are not allowed. Keep your phone away while you walk through.
How to combine the museum with the temple
The Town Hall stands at the start of the Heritage Plaza. From there the Heritage Street leads about 1 km towards the Darbar Sahib. It was designed to be friendly to pedestrians, but motorbikes and rickshaws can still use it, so stay aware as you walk.
A sensible order is the museum first, for the background to 1947, then Jallianwala Bagh, then the Golden Temple. There is a paid car park near the temple if you come by car. Read about the memorial on the Jallianwala Bagh page and about the temple under timings and rules.
Amritsar lies about 30 km from the Attari border, where the daily border ceremony takes place. See the Wagah border page for the practical points.

Planning your visit to the Partition Museum
Small details that make the visit smoother.
Pick the right day
Tuesday to Sunday works, except 26 January, 15 August and 2 October. On other public holidays, look at the board at the entrance before you walk over.
Ask for a guided visit
The museum offers guided visits on request through its management. Ask about a fee on arrival or in advance.
Bring the family
Children up to and including 5 years enter free. The museum has a lift, which helps with strollers and wheelchairs.
Allow time and quiet
The galleries deal with loss and displacement and are built from personal accounts. Give yourself time to read and listen, and do not plan the museum as a quick stop between two sights.
The museum, Jallianwala Bagh and the Golden Temple lie within walking distance of each other, so the three together make a compact route through the old city. Start early in the day, finish with the temple, and leave the evening for the Palki Sahib ceremony if you wish.
