Things to do in Amritsar

The Golden Temple is the reason most people come, but the city around it easily fills a second day. Within a short distance you find a fort with several museums, a Hindu temple in its own pool, a memorial garden and a museum about 1947. Most of it can be done on foot or with a short ride.

A good first day starts at the temple in the morning and follows the Heritage Street toward the Town Hall. The Partition Museum sits in the Town Hall, which is 5 to 7 minutes on foot from the temple and from Jallianwala Bagh. The fort suits the evening, because it stays open late.

Gobindgarh Fort

The fort is open daily from 10:00 to 22:00. Inside, the Toshakhana and the Warfare Museum have their own hours: Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00โ€“17:00. They are closed on Mondays and on public holidays, so an open fort does not mean every museum is open. The Pagdi and Sikh Art Museum runs from 10:00 to 21:30.

Tickets are sold as packages. For foreign guests in 2026, the daytime package costs INR 300 and covers entry, live performances and the Pagri Museum. The package with the 7D show costs INR 750. After 17:00 the packages cost INR 1,100 or INR 1,400, depending on what is included. Indian guests have their own package list with different prices, so do not compare the two lists without checking what each includes.

Durgiana Temple and Ram Tirath

The Durgiana Temple is a Hindu temple with links to Durga and Lakshmi Narayan. It is a separate site and not another name for the Sikh shrine. The temple stands in its own pool and is open from 06:00 to 22:00. Ask locally about entry and quieter hours.

Ram Tirath

Ram Tirath is a Hindu pilgrimage site. Tradition links it with Valmiki, Sita and the sons Luv and Kush. It is open from 06:00 to 20:00. If you want to see a fair there, ask about the dates before you travel.

Heritage Street, Partition Museum and Jallianwala Bagh

The Heritage Street is a walkway laid out for pedestrians. It links the Town Hall with the temple over about 1 km. Scooters and rickshaws also use it, so do not expect a car-free walk. It is still the easiest way to move between the museum and the temple.

Partition Museum

The museum is in the Town Hall and is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 18:00. It also closes on 26 January, 15 August and 2 October. In 2026, Indian nationals pay INR 10 and foreign nationals pay INR 250. Children up to and including 5 years and Partition survivors enter free. The galleries, about 14 in all, show memories of the 1947 division of British India, personal objects, interviews and audiovisual material. Photos and video are not allowed inside. Guided visits are available on request through the museum management. Read more on the Partition Museum page.

Jallianwala Bagh

The garden is a memorial to the massacre of 13 April 1919. The garden is open from 06:30 to 19:30 and the museum from 10:00 to 17:00. Entry is free. The Jallianwala Bagh page covers the site and its history.

For most first visits, the temple, Jallianwala Bagh and the Partition Museum fill one day, and the fort suits the evening. Add the Durgiana Temple if you have a second day. The Attari border ceremony is about 30 km from the city, roughly an hour by taxi. Check the current situation and timings first on the Wagah border page.

Amritsar: frequently asked questions
