Golden Temple from Delhi: the short version
The easiest way to reach the Golden Temple from Delhi is by train. The Vande Bharat Express takes 5 hours 30 minutes, and the Swarn Shatabdi takes 6 hours 10 minutes. Amritsar railway station is about 2 km from the temple, and you can finish the last part on foot. Plan to stay at least one night, and use the day after for the temple and the langar.
The two trains leave from two different stations in Delhi, so check which one your ticket names. Timetables change, so confirm your date when you book. If you prefer a guided plan, you can book an Amritsar tour once you are there.

Delhi to Amritsar train
Two trains, two stations. Times for 2026.
| Train | From | Departs | Arrives in Amritsar | Travel time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vande Bharat Express 22487 | Delhi Junction (DLI), Old Delhi | 15:15 | 20:45 | 5 h 30 min |
| Swarn Shatabdi 12029 | New Delhi (NDLS) | 07:20 | 13:30 | 6 h 10 min |
The Vande Bharat does not run on Fridays. Fares and class availability depend on the date, so check them when you book. For most travelers, the Swarn Shatabdi is the better fit: you arrive in the early afternoon, drop your bags and still have the whole afternoon for the Partition Museum, Jallianwala Bagh or the temple. Take the Vande Bharat if you would rather leave after lunch and reach the temple in the evening.
Delhi Junction (DLI) in Old Delhi and New Delhi (NDLS) are different stations. Mixing them up is the most common mistake, so look at the station code on your ticket and allow time to reach the right one.
Amritsar from Delhi: your arrival
From Amritsar station it is about 2 km to the temple. Take a taxi or a rickshaw toward the temple, then walk the last part. The street from the Town Hall toward the temple, Heritage Street, is about 1 km long and laid out for walkers. You may still share it with two-wheelers and rickshaws.
Do not count on a same-day return. If you take the morning train out of Delhi and want to go back the same evening, check the return timetable when you book. Staying one or two nights gives you time for the temple at a calm pace.
The bus station is about 1.7 km from the temple, a little closer than the railway station. The airport (ATQ) is another way in. It is about 13 km from the temple. Check current flights from Delhi with the airlines. More on getting there.

A simple two-day plan from Delhi
Based on the Swarn Shatabdi.
Day 1: arrive and walk
Arrive at 13:30 and check in. In the afternoon, visit the Partition Museum, open Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 18:00, then walk to Jallianwala Bagh. In the evening, see the temple in the dusk light.
Partition Museum โDay 2: the temple and the langar
Go to the temple early in the morning. Cover your head, take your shoes off and join the free meal in the langar hall before you leave.
Langar โOption: Attari at sunset
The border ceremony is about 30 km away, roughly one hour by taxi. Confirm the current time, bring your passport and check your government's travel advice first.
Wagah and Attari โIf your arrival falls on a Monday, swap the Partition Museum for the temple and Jallianwala Bagh, because the museum is closed that day.
What to pack for the temple
Small items that make the first visit easier.
Bring a scarf or a clean cloth for your head, shoes that are easy to take off and clothing that covers the body. Travel light on the day you visit, because you walk barefoot and move through crowds. Entry is free, so you need no ticket money for the temple itself. The timings and rules page lists everything in one place.
